ICE SKATING FACILITY, NEW WALMART COMING TO COMPASS CREEK

The new development is underway between Ashburn and downtown Leesburg.

There’s been site work happening for months now, but it appears the vast Compass Creek development is preparing to come to life along the Greenway between Ashburn and downtown Leesburg.

The Washington Business Journal is reporting that next week, construction crews will officially break ground on the mammoth ION International Training Center, a huge ice skating and events venue. According to the article, the $21 million center will be 100,000 square feet, have two ice rinks for hockey tournaments and skating competitions, and up to 4,200 spectator seats. The facility could also be open to uses such as martial arts tournaments, high school graduations and even concerts.

The skating center is just the tip of the iceberg at Compass Creek. According to plans, the development will stretch from Battlefield Parkway south and east to Shreve Mill Road. It will include industrial space and office buildings. The renderings above are only preliminary and the final layout and usage plans may be different.

Of most interest to residents in the area, Compass Creek is slated to have a retail area, including the new home for Leesburg’s Walmart store. Ground should break on the new Walmart in early 2018. The current Walmart location near the Leesburg Bypass and Edwards Ferry Road would move to Compass Creek’s retail section sometime in 2019. Plans also call for a variety of restaurants and shops there.

Drivers on the Greenway can already see the site that will become Compass Creek. There is a new exit off of westbound 267 that is built, but not open yet. This new exit will lead drivers coming from Ashburn and points east into the heart of Compass Creek and directly to the Walmart.

Just don’t disturb the graves on the site! I wouldn’t want to patronize a place that graves were dug-up to build.

Anonymous: But we already have a Walmart… This is a new replacement, and the existing Walmart building will be sold, so what’s the problem?!

Theodore: Grave sites are just a waste of land. The memories of those buried can be honored in other ways, such as a memorial near the site.
