CLOSED SIGN POSTED AT CHENG’S CHINESE IN STERLING

The local landmark has been serving Cantonese and Szechuan cuisine for nearly 30 years.

Word is racing through social media that Cheng’s Oriental Restaurant in Sterling has closed up shop. A “closed” sign is hanging on the front door and the place is locked up and dark during regular business hours.

The Burn has tried calling several times, but the phone just rings and rings. The online ordering feature is disabled. We suppose it’s always possible that they are temporarily closed due to work or travel or an illness. But usually a restaurant will post an explanation.

Cheng’s has served up Asian fare in Sterling for nearly 30 years now. It opened in 1988. If the restaurant is indeed closed, it comes just weeks after Applebee’s closed in the same shopping center.

Louis Cheng, who originally opened Cheng’s Oriental Restaurant, sold it and left in 2013. He now owns and operates Cheng’s Asian House in Chantilly.

Too bad, but the two guys that took over were horrible business people. We had been regular customers there for 17 years and they could barely go out of their way to speak to us. The wait staff, like Tina who had been there for at least 10 years all left and we were told by the staff that they were taking their tips. One of the other waitresses told us that she had asked for a day off for an emergency for the first time in 7 or 8 years and they said no so she also quit. Let’s face it since 2013 the place is been on a downward slide. The food was still good but the bathrooms the carpets and everything else was just filthy. Not sure where we’ll go for good Chinese food now but it was painful to watch that place go down the toilet because of bad management.

We go to Louis Cheng’s Restaurant in Chantilly and the food is even better (we were loyal Cheng’s Sterling customers for nearly 20 years). And Mr. CHENG, his wife, and their entire staff are warm and inviting.

Apparently, the building was no longer safe. The bank right next door also closed and they are also NOT coming back to that location. We loved Cheng’s food, so if anyone knows if they are going to relocate somewhere in Sterling, please let us know!
