THE SAFEWAY MYSTERY: WHAT NEW STORE IS TAKING OVER?

For months now, southern Ashburn has been buzzing about what grocery store is going to take over the space vacated by Safeway in the Broadlands Village Center. We may be getting close to an answer — and the answer is not Publix.

The Burn spoke to Janet McCarthy, a representative of Saul Centers, the owners of the property. McCarthy says they are in talks with another grocery store brand, but as of this writing, there is no deal to announce. Regardless, McCarthy says area residents shouldn’t expect to see a new store open in the space until at least Summer 2017. Besides executing an agreement, a new tenant will have to go through extensive permitting and renovations on the store before opening.

One note that is sure to burst a lot of bubbles: McCarthy did confirm that the possible new tenant is not Publix Supermarkets, the uber-popular Florida chain that is making a move into Virginia. Rumors have circulated around Ashburn for months that Publix was coming to the Broadlands.

How about a Trader Joe’s! While the space is much larger than most TJ stores, I’m sure it could be reconfigured. Food for thought ????

Bring a Wegmans to Broadlands to replace the old safeway and add stores like what they have at Dulles 28…that would cause the business to boom in that Shopping Center!
