BEAUTIFUL PARK PLANNED FOR BEAVERDAM RESERVOIR

If you haven’t seen it lately, the huge manmade lake along Ashburn’s western border is currently drained dry.

This week, Loudoun Water and NOVA Parks unveiled plans that could change the way we relax and recharge in Ashburn: a huge park bordering the Beaverdam Reservoir, complete with docks, a boardwalk, a pavilion, several shelter houses, walking paths and and 8-mile hiking trail circling the reservoir.

The new park would be situated behind the baseball fields at the intersection where Belmont Ridge turns as it meets Northstar. It would include 200 parking places and facilities for area rowing groups, including several high school rowing clubs, that use the reservoir for practice.

If you haven’t seen the Beaverdam Reservoir recently, go take a look. You won’t believe your eyes. The large manmade lake has been completely drained while they upgrade the dam the controls water flow into it. It looks like a barren moonscape. If you look closely, you can see remnants of the old Mount Hope road and bridge that once crossed Beaverdam Creek before the reservoir covered them up in the early 1970s.

Preliminary timelines call for construction to begin in late 2018 with the first phase of the new park opening in 2019.

It would be cool if they built a new community and maybe a town center where the resoivoir used to be.

Hey Dan H don’t you think they have taking away enough of the wildlife area already around here ” shaking head” you got enough wildlife running all over the streets n neighborhoods around here cause all the construction they have did by taking there land

I walk my dog there as often as I can. It is basically woods now which make it a very special place for dogs now to run around and be free. I hope this does not affect the ability for dogs to have some fun.

Bob- As long as your dog can dodge all the broken glass left by the ‘quality’ residents in the area. It is amazing the amount of trash and broken bottles that surround the waterfront of the reservoir.

I loved the lake the way it was, rustic, rocky and peaceful. I hope this “upgrade” doesn’t ruin it; however, with all of the building going on around here people absolutely need something to do, might as well have a place they can de-escalate and relax. It should be great for all to appreciate nature. Maybe it will remind them how beautiful nature is so that we could better preserve it, and live with it- not destroy it.
