NORDSTROM CLOSING AT DULLES TOWN CENTER

After 15 years in Loudoun, the department store will close Sept. 8.

One of the nicest department stores in Loudoun County is pulling out. Nordstrom has announced they are closing their location at the Dulles Town Center shopping mall. The final day will be Sept. 8.

A statement from the company president said they would focus on other area stores and, after 15 years at the mall, feel that closing this location is the best decision for them. (Click here to read the full statement from Nordstrom.)

There are other Nordstrom stores in the area including Tysons Corner and Pentagon City, as well as several Nordstrom Rack stores.

No mall wants to have one of its major anchor stores vacant, but in this time of online shopping, major retailers like department stores are finding their business model is more challenging than ever. It will be interesting to see if the DTC can find a new tenant for that space.

Seems Nordy’s kept the riff-raff out. At least on that side of the mall. Other than Dick’s… there’s really no reason to shop there anymore.

I guess this is what happens when you make bad business decisions based on outrageous political whims like removing all Ivanka Trump merchandise. One more snowflake has melted.

That is going to be a huge blow to DTC. Tanya this is what happens when you lease more space than necessary. Malls have been on the decline for past 20 years or more. Retailers have now figured that they have eaten too much and are now pushing back from the table. This is a blaring indicator of the state of retail in Loudoun. Stores close but new construction continues. I fear the dominoes will begin to fall as a result of this. Lerner will have to make an aggressive move to keep current anchors from following suit. So, here’s a thought. Carve it up into badly needed and expertly designed affordable housing units on one floor with a bottom floor Home Goods/ drug store. It’s time for planning in Loudoun to move into the 21st century and stop lagging behind other more progressive jurisdictions.

Nordstrom’s operates excellent stores, but to be fully profitable each unit has to see high traffic every week of the year. Even during the Christmas season the Nordstrom at Dulles never achieved that. In fact just about every retailer at the DTC underperforms to the averages of it’s corporate owners. Only Macy’s in the DWT does that. The problem for eastern Loudoun county and western Fairfax county is that Tysons Corner is too close. Tysons offers far more stores and more destination name plates such as Bloomingdale’s, Crate & Barrel, LL Bean, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Pottery Barn, Williams Sonoma, J Crew, and far larger units of a Macy’s and national chains that are just 15 minutes further away. Too often area consumers have not found the selection at DWT and then had to drive to Tysons anyways. So they stopped even trying DWT. I would expect that Sears and Lord & Taylor will pull out in the next 2 years.

Would love to see a Dillard’s or Belks move into that space.
