ALL-GIRL SHAKESPEARE TROUPE PERFORMS “AS YOU LIKE IT”

The Lady Chamberlains feature students from area high schools.

All Girls Shakespeare

Every once in a while, a story comes to our attention that makes us say, “Wow.The Lady Chamberlains in Loudoun County is one of those stories and we wanted to bring them to your attention on this International Woman’s Day.

The Lady Chamberlains is an all-female group of high school students from around Ashburn and around Loudoun County who stage, direct and perform Shakespeare plays all by themselves. All the proceeds from their shows go to support LAWS, the Loudoun Abused Women’s Shelter. Tonight, tomorrow and Saturday, they are performing “As You Like It” at 7 p.m. at Eagle Ridge Middle School.

“Our mission statement is helping women onstage, backstage and off stage,” says Lydia Smith, a senior at Briar Woods High School who is directing “As You Like It” this weekend. “The idea is to give young women a chance to play roles that they wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to and, at the same time, give back to our community, specifically underprivileged and abused women in the area.”

The Lady Chamberlains formed several years back and students from schools such as Briar, Stone Bridge, Dominion, Rock Ridge, Academy of Science, even home schooled students have been involved. They’ve performed Hamlet, The Tempest and others.

Girls producing, directing and acting Shakespeare without ANY guys. And on today of all days.

These girls embody everything about what today means and they’ve got a step up as they prepare to enter the world as adults.

    Bravo, Ladies. Bravo!
