WEGMANS ADDS MADE-TO-ORDER MEXICAN AT ITS STERLING STORE

Customers can choose from a variety of ingredients to customize their meals.

Taking a page from the Chipotle handbook, Wegmans grocery store at the Dulles 28 Centre in Sterling has added a build-your-own burrito bar in their popular prepared foods area. Customers can choose burritos, tacos, nachos, quesadilla and more, then choose their specific ingredients and watch as its built before their eyes.

The menu and the recipes at the Mexican station have actually been designed by an award-winning chef. Roberto Santibañez has partnered with Wegmans on several projects including the new Mexican menu. He’s also the culinary director at Mi Vida, a Mexican street food restaurant at the new District Wharf in DC.

Among the special creations Santibañez and his team have whipped up: authentic corn tortillas made with whole-kernel corn, a mahi-mahi taco featuring pickled cabbage and Mexican tartar sauce, fresh guac and fresh salsa and vegetarian options including a mushroom tacos and burritos.

This is the first Mexican station at a Wegmans in Virginia. There are two others at stores in New York and one will be opening soon at the Wegmans in Chantilly. No word yet if they might open one at the Leesburg store as well.

I notice a big difference on how well managed then Dulles 28 Wegmans is compared to the Leesburg store. Lessburg is dirty, no self-checkout and their create your own beer 6-pack has horrible selections. The Dulles location just over does a better job and it shows.

Wegmans adds Chipotle to it’s menu, but it’s not Chipotle…Got it.

Maybe they are leaving out the diarrhea and vomiting that usually comes with Chipotle.

Then what’s the point? Go big or go home.
