Exciting news as a new home decor shop opens inside the Historic Ashburn Mill in the heart of old Ashburn. It’s the first phase in a redevelopment of the landmark property that will see the addition of a coffee shop and a tap room in the coming months.
The name of the first business in the mill is A New View. It quietly opened its doors to customers on Saturday. They will be open today — Sunday — as well, then closed this week before their grand opening next Saturday, September 29.
The mill is surprisingly spacious inside and Kim Harris and her team have filled several room with all types of charming decorative items.
The owners of the mill have been working for years on their plans and things are finally coming to fruition. The Burn first told you about the early plans back in March 2017.
Opening the retail shop was the first goal. Next, they plan to open a coffee shop in the mill within the next several months — definitely by the holidays. Finally, the third phase will be to open a tap room featuring Virginia beers and wines. The tap room will also have a kitchen and serve food.
Besides its location in the heart of Ashburn, the Historic Ashburn Mill also sits directly on the W&OD Trail, which sees thousands of runners and bikers on any given week during nice weather. The main entrances to A New View and the future coffee shop and tap room actually face the trail. The hope is that — in addition to attracting visitors from the surrounding community — the mill will become a great rest stop for folks using the trail.
So no more brewery? Disappointed.
The only excitement that’s ever surrounded this place was an announcement that Dirt Farm was setting up a brewery. Now they start with an antique shop, which this was in the first place, and set the brewery as their last phase? Frustrating.
No one ever announced Dirt Farm was coming there. It was reported that there were talks underway. That was 18 months ago, and those talks apparently didn’t come to fruition. The owners of the mill encountered many hurdles in regards to a brewery and with county rules. They have been working through all those for the past 18 months. The plans currently call for a tap room featuring Virginia beers, not a brewery.
Understood on the brewery/tasting room delineation and that there was no formal announcement from Dirt Farm. Semantics aside, it seems the lion’s share of the facility will remain an antique shop which serves a small portion of the community and misses out on the potential many were excited about (a trailside watering hole). Looking forward to seeing what the coffee shop and tasting room consist of.
I think you will be surprised, Rusty. I got a tour of the mill and it’s surprisingly large. The antique store is just a small portion of it. After they open the coffee shop, the tap room is supposed to have a nice selection of Virginia beers and wines, and also a full kitchen offering meals. So if everything goes as planned, it should be a substantial “watering hole.”
Are they planning on expanding the parking? Not much around there and certainly not enough to handle the volume that would be created by adding these new attractions.
Actually, the Burn announced on 14 March 2017 “Dirt Farm Brewing is a popular brewery out in Bluemont. Now, we’re hearing that Steve Zurschmeide, from the family that owns and operates Dirt Farm, is intending to create a new brewery here in Ashburn.”

I guess their talks with the mill folks ultimately didn’t come to fruition.

Looks like they put the antique store in the middle of the building? Is that right? Which side is the coffee shop going into? Side closest to the BBQ?
