Pool, basketball courts on tap for future Ashburn Rec Center

The facility is going to be built near the Dulles Greenway in the Broadlands.

The site plans for the new Ashburn Recreation and Community Center have been filed with the county — and from them, we are getting our first indications of what features and amenities might be included in the long-awaited project.

From the larger view of the plan, you can see how it sits on a parcel of land off Broadlands Boulevard, just west of the Lidl grocery store and Royal Farms convenience store. Clyde’s Willow Creek Farm restaurant is to the west. The Dulles Greenway exit ramp is just to the north.

When we zoom in on the actual facility, we can make out what some of the possible features might be. We should stress — Loudoun Parks & Rec declined to confirm any details on the new center — so these plans and the amenities in the center could change.

Nevertheless, it looks like there will be an outdoor playground, two basketball courts, meeting rooms and classrooms, staff offices, bathroom/locker rooms and a large, possibly Olympic-sized swimming pool. There is also a feature shown that could be a children’s pool or water play area. Again, this is just based on what things look like on the plan. No promises.

The Burn reached out to Parks & Rec and they said they weren’t ready to release any information yet. They hope to hold a community meeting in late September where they will provide more details on the plans for the Ashburn Recreation and Community Center.

We were told they hope to have the project ready to put out for construction bids by mid-2020 with the actual work taking up to 36 months. If that timeline holds true, we might be seeing a finished facility until late 2023 or more likely 2024.

Given that in the original release it was described as having a 50 meter by 25 yard pool, and that they announced that before we voted to fund it, there better be an Olympic sized pool.

I’ll believe it when I see it. This Rec Center is 5-years delayed. Coming in the year 2025ish (lol). “possibly Olympic-sized swimming pool”, it will need two 50 Meter pools to keep up with the demand. Forcing 12 year olds to swim at 5am because of a lack of resources is child abuse, plain and simple – yet its an every day occurrence in Loudoun (richest county in the US).

LOL, THREE YEARS to build this thing?!? The new Raiders Stadium in Las Vegas, with a development cost of $1.8 billion, will be built in 3 years. I’ve been told the Community Meeting will be on September 26th, but that info is a month old, so it may have changed. You can bet your backside I’ll be there to ask them about this proposed schedule. And to find out what kind of due diligence they’ll conduct to prevent the fiasco that occurred at Dulles South.

How will Parks & Rec be able to staff this facility when they can’t staff their current pools as advertised? Dulles South, Claude Moore, Franklin Park…all having staffing problems and closing all the time.

How will Parks & Rec be able to staff yet another pool when Dulles South, Claude Moore, and Franklin Park are all closing throughout the week because they can’t be staffed with enough lifeguards?

Yup, true statement. Once summer ends they cannot find lifeguards. They just might need to pay more (geez, what a concept, lol).
