Big news! A timeline for the removal of the much despised Lexington Drive traffic light on Route 7 has made its way to The Burn.
Here is the Virginia Department of Transportation current plan for getting rid of the light.
- September 23 — temporary electronic signage goes up announcing to drivers that Lexington will close on October 7.
- September 26 and 27 — detour signs are installed. (They will remain covered until the detour commences.)
- September 30 — remove the concrete median in front of Blue Mount Nursery’s entrance so cars on Lexington Drive can come in and out.
- October 7 — weather permitting, close the Route 7 median at Lexington Drive and both legs of Lexington Drive with barrels and plastic barricades.
This is huge news for commuters who take Route 7. The goal has long been to remove all the traffic lights on Route 7 between Sterling and Leesburg. Overpasses have been built at Loudoun County Parkway, Ashburn Village Boulevard and Belmont Ridge Road. You should be able to drive from the Dulles Town Center mall to the outskirts of Leesburg without stopping.
Except for the intersection at Lexington Drive in Ashburn. The traffic light there causes huge backups during rush hours. Now it’s going away — and soon. October 7 can’t come soon enough.
Kudos to Broad Run Supervisor Ron Meyer who has been one of the key players in pushing for the Lexington Drive closure and negotiating with VDOT and others to speed up the timeline.
Ok… but then HOW do we get to the nursery?
You will come via Riverside Drive at Ashburn Village Parkway.

This should have been done as soon as the connection from Lexington to the Ashburn Village overpass was in place. Not every intersection on a major highway needs to have every possible option built into it when hundreds of yards in either direction is a fully functioning overpass. Taxpayer consideration should take a higher priority than political favors.
And so what are the ultimate plans for this closure? Will they be building an overpass? Or will it be permanantly closed for any access whatsoever?
The closure is permanent. I believe access will be via Riverside Parkway from the west and eventually from the east as well when it connects to Loudoun County Parkway.
And this was the fastest /safest way to get to all the offices along Premier Plaza Drive.
One traffic light and everyone thinks it’s the end of the world to actually have to slow down a bit and not do 65+ in a 55, especially at rush hour.
REALLY!!! JC, Do you really think that the Lexington Traffic light just caused a “little bit” of a slow down. Maybe if you drive it between say midnight and 4AM LOL. Tell me what was the point of building all of those overpasses? Oh to allow traffic to flow more freely between 28 & Battlefield.. Well why have one lame light so that a few people can save a mile of driving by having to go to Ashburn Village road? oh no!!! Don’t hold up the masses for a select few when they have reasonable alternatives. There is no safety issue by having to go around. Fastest, well boo hoo if you can’t spend the extra 3 minutes going around. Slow down a bit LMAO

I hope that they at least keep a deceleration lane to turn right onto Lexington Drive from Eastbound Route 7. This will make it easier to access One Loudoun, which will draw a lot more traffic when it is completed. That won’t negatively impact traffic flow and will leverage already-existing infrastructure. I’m also glad the intersection is gone but I think it valuable to allow right turn only from Route 7 and possibly even right turn only for One Loudoun egress. No traffic light required.
