Three new virtual concepts debut in Loudoun from Red Robin

Chicken Sammy’s is the lead one — focusing on a variety of chicken sandwiches.

You can’t swing a dead cat these days — or should we say chicken — without bumping into another new virtual restaurant, also sometimes called a “ghost kitchen.” Now, three new virtual concepts have debuted from parent restaurant Red Robin.

Chicken Sammy’s is a delivery-only restaurant focused on chicken sandwiches. With all the hoopla in the past year or so over Popeyes chicken sandwich and all the competitors, Red Robin thinks it has what it takes. The menu includes the Crispy Chicken sandwich, the California Chicken, the Teriyaki Chicken and the Smoked BBQ Chicken.

Red Robin has also debuted The Wing Dept., a virtual restaurant specializing in bone-in and boneless wings. Finally, they are offering a third concept called Fresh Set, which is focused on salads and wraps. We noticed there is some overlap in the menus of the three concepts. In Loudoun County, both the Red Robin in Ashburn and the Red Robin in Sterling are serving as home base for the new brands, which are offered on delivery platforms like DoorDash and Postmates.

Ever since the coronavirus pandemic set in, restaurants big and small have been searching for ways to increase revenue and serve more customers while dining rooms have been under capacity restrictions. Delivery has been the saving grace in many instances, and now restaurants are creating these new virtual restaurant/ghost kitchen concepts on almost a daily basis. The Burn has been covering the explosion of ghost kitchens for months now — see our reports on many of the different ones that have opened here — and there are more on the horizon.

Sounds interesting, but not if I have to trust one of those delivery services. The chances of getting all of what you ordered are about 50/50. The manager at Slapfish, for instance, told me it is a huge problem, where they know they packed the right order, but it doesn’t get to the customer. I had a lobster roll disappear, for instance. I realize delivery drivers are underpaid and many people don’t tip them properly, but I pick up my own food these days. If I can call and go get it myself, these concepts sound good.
