Loudoun shuts down Saturday vaccination clinic, cancels appointments

The clinic is being held six days a week in a former department store space.

Bad news for the hundreds or even thousands of people scheduled to get their first or second COVID-19 vaccination shots tomorrow, Saturday, April 10 at the Loudoun County Health Department’s Dulles Town Center location. The county has announced the clinic will be closed for the day and all appointments are canceled.

“Due to unforeseen facility issues, the COVID-19 vaccination site will be closed on Saturday,” an alert sent via email reads. “Your COVID-19 vaccination appointment is cancelled. We regret the late notice and any inconvenience.”

A county spokesperson said a plumbing problem led to the closure. “It is simply due to a plumbing issue that will not allow us to open the facility. It has nothing to do with (any) vaccine,” said Glen Barbour, the Public Affairs and Communications Officer for Loudoun County Government. “A plumber has been called and we should learn more about the issue and when it will be fixed tomorrow.”

Health officials have been conducting a massive vaccination clinic at the Dulles Town Center shopping mall Monday through Saturday, using the former Nordstrom department store space which has been vacant for years. People who have had their appointments abruptly canceled are being asked to log into the VAMS system and reschedule. Times as soon as this coming Tuesday were available in the system, as of 9:30 p.m. Friday.

Feels like you buried the lede. Why is it that COVID evokes the need for drama in reporting? Why does the reader have to get the third paragraph to find out it’s a plumbing problem? Better headline: “Plumbing Issue Forces Vaccine Site to Close Saturday.”

Hi David. It was actually not burying the lede. (Your use of that spelling indicates you may have a background in journalism.) The lede is that the clinic was closed and the appointments for that day cancelled. The cause of it was secondary to the fact that the clinic was closed and appointments cancelled, which had the potential to impact hundreds or even a few thousand people. It was not drama. It was just facts. You wouldn’t write “Brakes Fail on Car” and then later in the story, report that it killed three people.

Just another excuse of how poorly Va is providing COVID vaccines. I know when I went, they could have had another 1000-2000 receive the vaccine. VA is behind in many state run programs: COVID vaccine, VEC(VA unemployment), and DMV. VA deserves better.
