Man with Loudoun County ties rescued on Outer Banks

The family had gathered to remember a lost loved one from Sterling.

A Northern Virginia man was trying to spread his daughter’s ashes in the waves off Corolla on the Outer Banks when disaster struck. Rough waves nearly took him under until a man with a surfboard came to his rescue.

71 year-old Dennis Kaye of Falls Church had gathered on the beach last week with family members to honor his daughter, Kerry Kane of Sterling. But rip tides were strong that day. Another daughter, Shannon Kane Smith of Ashburn, was there as well and quickly knew her father was in trouble. “All of the sudden it seemed to get super rough really fast,” Smith said.
