W&OD Trail closed in Ashburn for transmission line work

Work got underway today on a transmission line project in Ashburn that has necessitated the closure of a 3.6 mile stretch of the W&OD Trail. All bicycle and pedestrian traffic on the trail is being detoured between Claiborne Parkway and Loudoun County Parkway.

Here are details shared on social media by the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority, which oversees the W&OD Trail.

“In order to maintain electric reliability for their customers, Dominion Energy will be replacing a conductor on their 230kV electric transmission line that runs alongside the trail through Ashburn.”

“To ensure that this is done safely and swiftly, the work will require the closure of and detour around a 3.6-mile section of the W&OD Trail, from Loudoun County Pkwy west to the eastern side of the Claiborne Pkwy overpass.”

“To travel around this area, a signed detour route, mostly along Gloucester Pkwy, will be provided. The re-string operations are scheduled to begin on Monday, October 18, and last through Friday, October 22, with the following week reserved as a contingency option.”

Below is a map showing the impacted stretch of the trail and the detour route.
