Small plane crash lands near Red Rum Drive in Ashburn

(UPDATED 9:40 p.m.) A small plane made crash landing in Ashburn Tuesday afternoon. The aircraft came down in a field off Red Rum Road  near the Lost Rhino Brewing Co. parking lot.

According to the Virginia State Police, the single-wing 1977 Cessna was flying from New Jersey to Dulles International Airport when it began experiencing mechanical problems.

The pilot, Aaron Adams, 28, of Denton, Texas, notified the Dulles tower of the problem.

Adams then attempted an emergency landing on a strip of private property behind the Raging Wire data center.

He was able to land, but didn’t have enough room to stop and the plane struck a dirt embankment.

Adams was the only person on the plane and he was treated for minor injuries.

The FAA and NTSB were notified. The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, Loudoun County Fire and Rescue and Metropolitan Washington Airport Police assisted at the scene.
