A new terminal building has been proposed for Dulles International Airport and now we have a first look at what the project could look like.
The 14-gate “Tier-2 Concourse (East)” would replace decades old gates at the eastern end of Concourse A where many passengers on regional flights have to go outdoors under covered walkways to board their planes.
The concourse would include new shops and restaurants. There would also be larger seating areas, airline lounges, ADA-compliant restrooms and more.
It would also be connected to the Aerotrain system that moves passengers from the main concourse to the various concourses.
The 400,000 s.f. facility is expected to cost somewhere between $500 million and $800 million.
The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority has submitted an application for a grant from the Federal Aviation Administration to get the project started.
They need to replace the C/D terminals before the do anything with A.
This will be nice, not sure it is really needed. I have flown out of there on Commutair many times.
Why don’t they design and create a new C and D terminal to get rid of the trailer park that’s been there for 30 years?!!
Ditto – why fix what isn’t broken and leave what someone appropriately called “the trailer park” named Terminal C/D?
The answer my friends is simple: United Airlines. UA is for all practical purposes the only carrier that uses Terminals C and D. They don’t want to spend the money or deal with the logistical hassles that a new terminal would entail. Unfortunately, the biggest airline at Dulles is fine with the gateway to our nation’s capital looking like a third world dump.
