Groundbreaking next week on huge new Ashburn Rec Center

It’s been a long time coming but shovel is going to meet dirt next week when the official groundbreaking is held for the future Ashburn Recreation and Community Center. The big moment will come next Thursday morning, June 16.

It’s been over a year since The Burn last reported on the new center. The various planning and permitting and construction bidding has been chugging along. But now things are starting to roll.

The 117,000 s.f. center is being built on a parcel of land just off Broadlands Boulevard. It will be in between Clyde’s Willow Creek Farm and the Lidl grocery store, for locals familiar with those landmarks.

The center is slated to include indoor features such as:

  • 50-meter competition pool with spectator seating
  • Classrooms, offices, and meeting spaces
  • Fitness areas
  • Full-size gymnasium
  • Leisure pool
  • Multi-purpose room with a catering and teaching kitchen
  • Running track
  • An indoor basketball gymnasium with six basketball hoops, and line markings for basketball, volleyball and pickleball
  • Soft sensory playroom
  • Spa

Meanwhile, outdoor features will include:

  • Large courtyard with seating
  • Multi-use trail around the property
  • Playground equipment
  • Splash play area

Currently, construction is slated to wrap up in the summer of 2025. From there, the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services — which will operate the center — will set an opening date to welcome the public.
