Groundbreaking held for Northstar Blvd extension in Loudoun

A groundbreaking was held Friday for a new 1.6-mile stretch of Northstar Boulevard that will ultimately be part of an uninterrupted connection between Route 7 and the Prince William County line.

The new stretch of Northstar is being built from Evergreen Mills Road south to Highway 50, aka the John Mosby Highway. It will connect with a similar project happening south of Route 50 connecting to Tall Cedars Parkway.

“When complete, this section of road will allow for a smooth, straight drive from Braddock Road to Belmont Ridge Road, directly across Route 50 on the segment of Northstar currently under construction,” said Supervisor Matt Letourneau in a post on social media.

Besides Loudoun County Parkway, this new road will become another direct connection between the Ashburn area and the South Riding area.

The Northstar project will consist of a new four-lane, median roadway and it will include a 10-foot wide shared use path on both sides of the street. There will also be a new traffic signal at Route 50.

At the northern end of the project — close to the current CVS Pharmacy and Filling Co. gas station — a new bridge will carry Northstar Boulevard over North Fork Broad Run.

A group of local leaders and VDOT representatives gathered for the ceremonial groundbreaking. The Northstar connection to Highway 50 is expected to be completed in Fall 2024.
