IKEA opening new concept store in Fairfax this summer

For Loudoun area fans of the famed IKEA furniture and housewares brand, a visit to the nearest IKEA store has meant long treks to Woodbridge or College Park, Md. But soon, shoppers will have a new option.

The Swedish company has announced that it will begin opening what it calls “Plan & Order” stores. One of these will be in Fairfax County.

These are smaller outlets that feature some samples of IKEA merchandise, but visitors will have the opportunity to meet with designers to plan out the spaces in their home.

The furniture and other items are then ordered and customers will return to the Plan & Order store to pick them up. They can also arrange to have the items delivered directly to their home.

The exact location of the future IKEA store is a 4,400 s.f. space at 4206 Fairfax Corner Avenue. That’s in the Fairfax Corner commercial center just off I-66.

By way of example, that’s roughly half the distance from Leesburg compared to traveling to the Woodbridge or College Park locations.

Other IKEA Plan & Order stores in the region are in the works for Arlington and Gaithersburg, Md. This is a new concept for IKEA and the DC-area locations will be some of the first of their kind in the United States.
