Capital Hive Meadery in Leesburg closing down

Sad news for local fans of mead, the honey-based fermented beverage that is reportedly the oldest alcohol drink in the works. Capital Hive Meadery in Leesburg has announced they are closing their commercial meadery after three years in business.

Word came via social media Friday afternoon. “Thank you to all who have supported us for the past three years. If you’ve been in recently, you know that we are closing. Our last day of operations will be the 31st. It has been such an awesome experience getting to meet so many of you over the years. We wouldn’t have made it this far without you. Unfortunately, as costs continue to rise, we just can’t keep it going.”

Capital Hive opened in late 2020 in a warehouse space off Sycolin Road near the Leesburg Airport.

They eventually added a tasting room where visitors could sample the meads that were flavored with ingredients such as fruits, spices, and nuts.

Varieties included White Chocolate Cheesecake, Spiced Pear, and Black Currant.

The only other meadery in Loudoun County that we are aware of is Stonehouse Meadery in Purcellville. There are others further afield in places like Front Royal and Winchester.
