Loudoun’s 1757 Golf Club going private in May

The public 1757 Golf Club on Waxpool Road between Ashburn and Sterling is going private. The announcement was made in an email to regular golfers that went out Wednesday morning.

“We thank you for your current patronage of the 1757 Golf Club,” the message read in part.

“On Sunday, May 1, 2022, the Club will transition to an affordable private golf course with an emphasis on improved tee time access, reduced outside tournament play and a robust calendar of Member and Guest social and competitive events,” it continued.

The club says it is upgrading the bunkers and rebuilding select tees on the 18-hole, par 70 course.

It’s also undertaking various beautification projects around the course and practice range, and updating the outdoor bar and adding a “food oasis.”

Details on the new membership fees are already on the course’s website. You can see more details here.

Meanwhile, the driving range and the restaurant will remain open to the general public.

It will never make it as a private course, too many better options. The course is in too bad of shape. I give it less than 5 years before changing back to public course.

The lack of affordable public golf in this area is frustrating to say the least. I understand the reasoning, and I can’t really fault these courses for doing what they do. Money talks and in this area there is far more money to be made in building housing or retail on an existing golf course or turning it private than letting joe average play a round on a Wednesday afternoon. I hope local golf fans such as myself don’t get too discouraged, there is golf in our area we just have to drive quite a ways to find it.

That is the issue with this county. GREED. It was a blank slate of woods and land and some Board of Supervisors, the Loudoun Economic Development Department plus the Revenue office all see $$$$ for new projects that serve to line pockets rather than give accessible activities. Sit in on one of the parks and rec county meetings and it is all about making new spaces not updating existing ones. Look at the new mega tennis complex and the new rec center proposal. Lots of outside funding. Want to ride your bike? No way, no trails, no bike lanes. Need more golf? No way, tear it down and build a data center. When the county is driven by revenue, which I get pays for schools, why then do the school admins need $$$$ when they are covering up crimes? This county lost its way to greed.

Didn’t they try this before? Original concept. A disaster. Lots of folks lost lots of money, like Darrell Green.
