Sad news for fans of pizza with cornmeal on the bottom — Mellow Mushroom has closed its doors in Herndon. The news was first reported by Reston Now.
A sign hanging on the front doors broke the bad news. “This location is permanently closed,” the message read. “Thank you for your support, and we look forward to serving you at another Mellow Mushroom location soon… Keep on Shroomin’.”
The restaurant at 1030 Elden Street opened nearly a decade ago — in the summer of 2013. It’s part of a large, nationwide chain with roughly 170 locations around the country, but primarily concentrated in the Southeast.
Mellow Mushroom is known for its stone-baked pizzas with a dusting of cornmeal as well as its craft cocktails.
The next nearest MM location is Chantilly. No word on a potential future tenant for the space on Elden Street that the pizzeria is vacating.
