Loudoun United facing biggest match in team’s history

Loudoun County’s local soccer team has what officials are calling the biggest match in its history. On May 10, Loudoun United will play its first match ever against a Major League Soccer team when they host the Columbus Crew at Segra Field in Leesburg.

The match is part of the annual U.S. Open Cup — a single elimination tournament that features professional and semi-pro teams from various leagues as well as some amateur teams for good measure.

That mix of teams from different levels adds to the excitement and is what brought about Loudoun United facing off against the Columbus Crew.

It’s like a minor league baseball team suddenly hosting an MLB team. Loudoun United officials say they are hoping for a “cupset” by beating the Crew.

The match is Wednesday, May 10 at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale now at the Loudoun United website.
