Huge new waterpark resort in the works for Virginia

Northern Virginia families wanting a wet and wild weekend getaway will soon have a new option. A huge indoor waterpark is in the works for a spot 80 miles away — give or take — just south of Fredericksburg.

Ground was broken last week on the new Kalahari Resort in Spotsylvania County, close to Interstate 95.

Kalahari Resorts is an operator of indoor waterpark resorts and convention centers. They currently have four locations — in Wisconsin, Texas, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. The Virginia resort will be its fifth.

According to the announcement, the 1.38 million s.f. resort “will offer 907 guest rooms and suites, a 175,000- square-foot indoor waterpark (admission to the waterpark is included for all registered overnight guests) featuring thrilling waterslides, dedicated children’s areas, a massive wave pool and surfing simulator, ten acres of seasonal outdoor pools, a 90,0000-square-foot Tom Foolerys Adventure Park, featuring thrill rides, a ropes course, climbing walls, arcade games and more. The site will also include 12 on-site food & beverage outlets, including buffet and quick-bite options and four signature dining experiences.”

As you may have guessed by the name, the resorts have an African theme and feature art and decor imported from and inspired by the African continent. The company is also involved with a variety of charitable endeavors in African countries.

The new Virginia resort is expected to open to the public in 2026.
