Nepalese market in the works for Ashburn shopping plaza

It sure seems like Nepalese food and cuisine are having a moment in the area. Two Nepalese restaurants — Himalayan Wild Yak and Roadhouse Momo & Grill — have opened in Ashburn in the past two years and now comes word that the community is getting a small Nepalese grocery store.

The Burn has learned that Kirana Pasal Himalayan Grocery & Meat Co. is coming to the Ashburn Square plaza. That’s the small retail center in the Old Ashburn neighborhood along Ashburn Road.

That’s the same center with a 7-Eleven at one end and the School of Rock at the other.

Kirana Pasal in the Nepali language means “neighborhood mart,” according to the owners.

They say they want customers from both the Nepali community and the wider community to shop at Kirana Pasal. They intend to carry products such as Himalayan salt, teas and coffees sourced from Nepal, as well as handicrafts and gifts in the vein of a World Market store.

They will have gourmet halal meats and there will also be a “snack corner” selling savory and sweet Nepalese street food.

They even plan to offer tour packages to Nepal for anyone wanting to explore the Himalayas.

Right now, Kirana Pasal is aiming for a late January or early February opening if everything goes smoothly.
