Bonchon out, Pelicana Chicken in at Sterling plaza

It’s looks like the Bonchon Korean fried chicken restaurant in Sterling has closed. We learned about this when we found out a new Korean chicken place was moving in.

The new restaurant is called Pelicana Chicken. It’s part of an international chain with thousands of locations — but there is only one other one here in Northern Virginia.

Pelicana is moving into the retail center that was known as the Regal Center. That’s at 20921 Davenport Drive just off Route 7. (It was called the Regal Center because there was a Regal movie theater there for many years, but that was torn down a few years ago.)

The Bonchon restaurant in the center apparently closed earlier this year, and now Pelicana Chicken is swooping in and taking the vacant space.

Pelicana was started in South Korea in 1982 and most of the locations are in Asia. However, the brand has quite a few locations in the U.S. as well — many of them are in California, but they are also in Texas, Nevada, Washington, Michigan, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Virginia.

Pelicana apparently opened its first Virginia location in Annandale in 2018 and now they are expanding locally into Sterling.

The menu at Pelicana Chicken is extensive — various forms and flavors of fried chicken are the centerpiece, but they also have chicken sandwiches, wings, soups, salads, sliders, rice bowls, and more. You can see the Annandale location’s menu below.

No word on when Pelicana Chicken will open in Sterling, so stay tuned.
