Ashburn’s Old Ox Brewery merging with Maryland brewer

The reach of Old Ox Brewery is about to expand thanks to today’s announcement of a merger between the Ashburn-based brewer and the Silver Branch Brewing Company based in Silver Spring, Maryland.

“Silver Branch Brewing Company and Old Ox Brewery will join forces to create one cohesive company that combines Old Ox’s brand recognition, distribution expertise, and brewing capacity with Silver Branch’s hospitality background, marketing experience, and quickly growing portfolio of beers,” the announcement read.

The Old Ox name won’t be going away. Both breweries will maintain their individual identities, but will also look to cross promote the brands and bring new beers to the communities they serve around the DMV.

While Old Ox is best known for its American style craft beers, Silver Branch has made a name for itself with European-style beers.

Some of their labels include Glass Castle, a Czech-style pilsner; Golden Goat, a German-style blonde bock lager; and even the interesting sounding Mondo Mundo, a Mexican-style Vienna lager. You can see Silver Branch’s full beer line-up here.

The final negotiations for the merger are still being ironed out, but the plan is to have the two operations fully integrated by the third quarter of this year.

To celebrate, the two brewing companies are planning a joint beer project to be released in May. The brewing of the beer is already underway, the label is designed — but the rest of the details are still under wraps.
