Report: Metro’s Silver Line extension could launch before Thanksgiving

At long last, there is an end in sight — this afternoon it was announced that hurdles have been cleared that could lead to Silver Line extension — with stops including Dulles International, Sterling and Ashburn — launching by Thanksgiving.

Our friends at InsideNova.com today reported that a safety watchdog for the Metro system has OK’ed the return to service of a certain type of railcar — the 7000 series — that had been temporarily sidelined.

The shortage of cars was one reason that the Metro bosses had feared they wouldn’t be operating the full Silver line in time for Turkey Day. Now that problem has been resolved.

Still no official launch date, but it sounds like we are closer than ever to having Metro service all the way to the airport and to Loudoun County — something that has been in the planning since the 1960s when the Dulles Toll Road was specifically built with room in the median for train tracks.

It was just last month that Metro released the official updated map (above) showing the Silver Line extending all the way to Ashburn. Over the past few weeks, workers have been hurriedly changing out roughly 5,000 copies of the map that appear across the entire Metro system.

I won’t believe this until the train arrives at the platform and allows people to get on.
