Troubled Smoothie King in Ashburn temporarily closed

The brand new Smoothie King in Ashburn is temporarily closed — never a good sign for a new business. The store opened last August in the Ashbrook Commons shopping plaza.

Ashbrook Commons is the large retail center at Route 7 and Ashburn Village Boulevard. When the Starbucks moved to a neighboring shopping center, it left behind a space that included a drive-thru window.

A Smoothie King franchisee signed a deal for the spot way back in 2020, but it took nearly two years to open. Covid delays were likely part of the long wait.

Once the smoothie shop opened last summer, there were quickly signs that things weren’t going smoothly. The Burn received several emails from customers who said when they tried to go, they found the store closed — even during hours when it was supposed to be open.

And indeed, when The Burn passed by to check these reports out, we also found the store locked in the middle of the day.

Now, signs on the door say “New Management Coming Mid March” and “Temporarily Closed — Grand Re-opening May 1.”

Hopefully taking a breather and bringing on new management will help the store find its footing — just as the shopping center its in gets a major makeover and new look. (See our Ashbrook Commons makeover story here.)
