New lighting at Ashburn data center will celebrate the community

Here’s something fun — a data center in Ashburn has installed lighting that it will use to illuminate its building to commemorate special events and holidays. They flip the switch for the first time tomorrow, Friday, September 22.

The Equinix data center stands at 22175 Beaumeade Circle in Ashburn. That’s on the northeast corner of Loudoun County Parkway and Waxpool Road.

On Friday, the exterior of the data center will be illuminated in maroon and gold to celebrate nearby Broad Run High School’s homecoming game.

The lights will officially go on at 6:37 p.m., which is roughly 30 minutes before sunset.

“Not taking sides, Equinix will light up the walls in navy blue, Carolina blue, and gray to mark the homecoming of its other neighbor high school, Stone Bridge, on October 13,” a press release from Equinix reads.

And this is apparently just the start. Equinix plans to use the light displays in a variety of color combinations to mark holidays, special Loudoun County events, and other milestones throughout the coming year.

“We know that sometimes data centers, as vital as they are to the digital lives we all lead, can look like big, boring boxes,” Chris Kimm, a senior vice president at Equinix, said in the release. “By lighting up our walls, we hope to bring a bit of joy to our neighbors while sparking interest in events and celebrations that matter to members of our community.”
