Opening of new Route 7 overpass in Ashburn delayed

Well, the best laid plans of mice and men — or in this case the Virginia DOT. The opening of a new overpass at George Washington Boulevard across Route 7 has been delayed due to a problem with traffic signals.

Local officials went ahead with a ceremonial ribbon cutting at the Ashburn site, but a Loudoun County DOT rep says the road remains closed at this time while crews try to sync up new traffic lights with the larger VDOT system.

The good news is that roadway originally wasn’t scheduled to be completed until sometime in 2024, but the work finished roughly seven months early. So, they’re still ahead of the timeline even with a delay.

The new overpass, which includes a pedestrian path on one side, brings George Washington Boulevard south across Route 7 and connects it to Russell Branch Parkway.

This provides new ways to enter and exit an area of office parks and residences north of 7 that was previously at a dead end.

The official word is the road will open sometime “later this fall,” so stay tuned.
