Report: Herndon is getting a Lidl grocery store

It looks like the town of Herndon will be the latest Northern Virginia community to get a Lidl discount grocery store. Another big headline is that another major store is apparently leaving.

That’s according to a report from the Washington Business Journal, which says Lidl has struck a deal to take over a portion of the Kohl’s department store building that sits at 2100 Centreville Road, just a couple of blocks.

When the Kohl’s will close and what future tenants might join Lidl in the remaining space are unknown.

There are at least 16 Lidl stores in the greater NoVa area, but for some reason Herndon and Reston are a veritable desert for the brand. Loudoun County just to the west has three Lidl locations with at least two more in the long term plans.

Lidl (rhymes with needle) is a German-based international grocer that started moving aggressively into the eastern United States a few years back. They are a direct competitor to the ALDI discount supermarket brand, which also has its roots in Germany.
