Ice skating rink proposed for One Loudoun

The future plans for One Loudoun in Ashburn just keep on evolving — and now a new proposal submitted to Loudoun County last week includes adding an ice skating rink at the popular shopping and dining center.

Back in February, The Burn broke the news about plans to build a new retail and office area known as Uptown. It would run along an expanded block of Exchange Street, the main drag through the center.

At the time, plans called for four new buildings with retail on the ground floor, plus a small park or green space. However, in the latest plans things have been tweaked.

In the new version, the small park is gone and in its place sits a fifth building for restaurant and retail space. And an ice skating rink has been added to an enlarged part of the median in the middle of Exchange Street.

You can see the previous plan (in color) followed by the new plan (in black and white) below.

Of course, the most obvious model for a skating rink of this nature is the one at the Reston Town Center. The two centers are very similar in concept and vibe, although the RTC is older and larger.

Each winter, the skating pavilion at the RTC is frozen over and opened to the general public for ice skating during the season, including over the holidays.

During the rest of the year, the pavilion space is sometimes used for other community and center events.

No details yet from the famously tight-lipped folks at One Loudoun as to what form the skating rink would take and how it would be used, but it certainly would be interesting addition to the already busy center.
